Marnus Labuschagne Left Out from Australia's One-Day International Team Versus India
Labuschagne finds himself omitted from the three-game ODI series facing India, with in-form Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw receiving a shock inclusion.
Performance Issues Lead to Omission
Labuschagne has been omitted from the one-day international side following being dismissed for one in each of his two innings during the top-end series against South Africa in August. Labuschagne has a best innings of 47 in his previous ten ODI innings.
The batsman has played 68 one-day internationals and accumulated 1,871 ODI runs at an batting average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now work towards a return to the Test side in time for the Ashes beginning in Perth on November 21.
Renshaw's Return and Team Changes
Recent performances suggest of a resurgence with 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw also hit a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.
The left-hander may to make his first white-ball appearance in the forthcoming series against India after his last inclusion in an ODI squad in 2022.
The left-hander has played 14 Test matches with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also aiming for a return to the Test team as Australia look for a solution to their batting top-order problems.
Bowling Additions and Injury Updates
Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc returns for the ODI series against India after having time off since starring for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.
BBL performer Mitch Owen may earn his ODI debut after sustaining a head injury in the build-up to Australia’s previous 50-over series against South Africa.
ODI captain Pat Cummins continues to be absent as he works to regain fitness from a spinal issue in time to captain Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.
Squad Selection Strategy and Schedule
Australia have announced a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the Ashes approaching, although Glenn Maxwell will miss all of the five-game T20 series due to a wrist injury sustained in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 sides after scoring a hundred in the final game against New Zealand to secure a two-nil victory last week.
“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be rotation through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the summer through Sheffield Shield cricket,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an crucial phase in the build towards the World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously prepare specific players for the Test matches ahead.”
Australia’s three-game ODI series against India commences on October 19 in Perth, before the opponents play five T20s from 29 October.
