The Tooth Fairy Story Review: Animated Adventure with a Touch of Kid-Appropriate Preteen Romance
In this animated adventure aimed at tweens, the world of fairies is dedicated to gathering teeth from sleeping youngsters and leaving gold beneath where they sleep. Skateboarding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (brought to life by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about spending his future to collecting baby teeth—a feeling that’s entirely reasonable. He’s only slightly more curious about the underlying economics of the situation: the fairies deliver the teeth to mysterious goblins, who supply gold as payment. However, Van’s interest grows when he spots a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who proves to be not at all the ugly gnome he had imagined.
An Unlikely Connection and Shared Threat
Everything is prepared for an exciting quest with a light sprinkling of teen romance (even though it remains very much suitable for children). The goblin and fairy groups are estranged from each other, and nothing fuels the thrill of the forbidden to unite beings as one. Both groups as seen here are incredibly similar, yet both maintain biased views about the other. Fairies are supposed to be self-centered sorts, given to taking whatever they fancy, while the goblins are allegedly stupid, smelly, and primitive, but are in fact intelligent and advanced in technology.
Naturally, such a setup requires a shared foe to unite against, and that need is met by a group of vicious spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret with these guys: they want to eat the fairies and goblins, and they serve as quite savage, if not especially competent, villains.
Target Audience and Final Thoughts
You won’t find all that many animated films aimed at the kind of audience that is beginning to have first crushes, but are not old enough for the content 14-year-olds are watching in lieu of Twilight. Should your youngster is in the right age bracket, it probably won’t to become their new all-time fave, but you could do worse.
A Tooth Fairy Tale arrives in Scottish cinemas from 10 October and across the United Kingdom from 24 October.
